Finding Support

Building Community

Building community is hard, but rewarding, work. You can find connection through shared identities, values, hobbies, interests etc.

Identity-focused communities include those like TrevorSpace, “an affirming, online community for LGBTQ young people between the ages of 13-24 years old” or Therapy for Black Girls Sister Circle, “a cozy corner of the internet for Black women to BE. Be in community. Be supported. Be yourself!” Take a gander at some of the M-Drive sections related to identity (gender, race, etc.) to find related support and community resources!

Values-focused communities may be found through things like volunteering or activism. Check out local mutual aid organizations or scope out sites like VolunteerMatch to see opportunities near you (or even remote!).

Hobbies or interest-focused communities are a great way to connect around shared activities. Want to join a photography group? I bet you can find one on Meetup.com. Athletic? How about joining a community sports league? Want to learn a new skill? How about some cooking classes? While some hobbies can get costly, there are many free or low-cost options. One of my favorite random groups I encountered was a free, weekly Acroyoga jam. If you can’t find a group that interests you, you can also consider creating a group/space!
